Here are a few examples of help needed in the community:
You can help Habitat Restore by working a shift or two as a cashier, stocker, or unloading donated materials to be sold. The profits from both stores go to help build new homes for low income residents.
St. Marys Hospital needs volunteers who would enjoy delivering Mail and Flowers and deliver the morning Beverage Cart to visitors in waiting areas. Volunteers also print out and deliver E-cards to patients. Simple computer skills and the ability to walk distances needed.
Second Harvest Food Bank needs volunteers to help sort, label, or package food into family-friendly portions for distribution throughout their 16 county service area.
Schumacher Farm Park in Waunakee, a farm museum, needs volunteers to help with Heirloom gardening, assist with maintaining prairie and woodland, and administrative support. Great place to enjoy nature and eat quantities of harvest from the gardens as available!
Driver Services needs drivers to take seniors (60 yrs. and older) to medical appointments or veterans (of all ages) to important appointments, or to deliver meals to seniors in Dane County communities outside of Madison. You set your own schedule, no minimum hours required. RSVP provides mileage reimbursement and extra liability insurance. Foster Grandparents Needed — Do you love working with children? Do you have some time to spare? The Foster Grandparent Program is looking for seniors to help as mentors in the classroom. A small tax-exempt stipend is available for volunteers who meet income-eligibility criteria. For more information, contact Daniela Sponseller at or 608-661-4271.
Group Projects/Homeworkers Program needs Group Liaison volunteers to visit a sewing/knitting group(s) once monthly. Deliver fabric/yarn; pick-up finished items. Enjoy a few hours a month volunteering. For more information contact Mary Schmelzer, Group Projects/Homeworkers Coordinator at (608) 310-7280 or .
Triad Program is looking for Volunteer committee members to serve on local Triad groups in Verona, West Madison, and Cottage Grove. Some committees meet monthly, others quarterly. Volunteers design surveys, flyers, assist in planning programs related to crime prevention and safety for seniors. They are needed to assist with free car checks, attend and facilitate programs, give presentations and chair and plan meetings. The Bus Buddy Tours Program offers seniors, age 60 and older, the opportunity to learn how to navigate the Madison Metro Bus System, while enjoying a fun social outing with other participants travelling to designated locations. There are three more trips scheduled for this season — see details below. Each participant receives a Bus Buddy Tour bag including a 10 ride bus pass, and Madison Metro Bus Ride Guide. July 13 — Wisconsin Veterans Museum — Explore museum exhibits and enjoy lunch at Ian’s Pizza;
August 17 — Bubbler Room, Madison Public Library — Hands on project at the Bubbler Room and lunch at the Plaza, home of the famous Plaza burger.
